Digital Consultation: Proposed ‘CycloPlay’ Outdoor Facility at Paddington Recreation Ground

On Monday 15 June, ActiveWestminster launched a digital consultation regarding the proposal for a new ‘CycloPlay’ outdoor facility at Paddington Recreation Ground (PRG). The proposed facility will be located between Essendine Gate entrance, Morshead Gate entrance and the Athletics track, and will create a year-round destination, enabling children, young people, families, adults and older people to get and stay active, primarily on bicycles, but also via other wheeled sports/activities. The digital consultation will last for a total of four weeks and will close at Midnight on Monday 13 July.

Who is the CycloPlay facility Designed For?

The design of the CycloPlay facility would create a new play, physical activity, leisure, sport and educational attraction for people, particularly children, young people, families and older people, to learn, participate and practice cycling in a dedicated and safe environment, that mimics elements our roads and streets.

In addition to cycling, other wheeled sports/activities would be welcome and promoted at the facility to enable that various users of the facility to practice all elements of learning to ride a bike, scooter and more! Although it would mainly be designed as a space to encourage, facilitate and enable cycling, the complete design will incorporate elements of play throughout. The design will provide:

  • A space for Bikeability courses/activities, to include both cycling basics and the risks and hazards of cycling in a city such as London.

  • A flexible facility for all park users to use for free, as well as providing a bookable space for group training activities.

How will the CycloPlay facility enhance Paddington Recreation Ground?

This facility would help to improve air quality by offering a further mode of active travel to Paddington Recreation Ground (PRG) and for people to actively travel, more widely, in and around Westminster.

CycloPlay will incorporate more areas for biodiversity enhancement, reduce any potential additional noise through planting and improve the horticultural appearance of the existing space where the facility is proposed to be developed.

This will build on the existinghigh-quality facilities at Paddington Recreation Ground and continue to enrich the vibrant biodiversity and nature of the park overall. Specific features of landscaping and planting that are not represented currently or that are under-represented in the wider park will also be included .

How will the CycloPlay facility be managed

Primarily, the facility will be free to access and use in the same manner as the Playground at Paddington Recreation Ground. However, it will also be available for bookings where there will be classes and activities delivered by Cycle Confident and other WCC approved suppliers. The facility continue to be managed by Everyone Active, as part of the existing operations of Paddington Recreation Ground.
