The Leadership Academy is organised by the Westminster Sports Unit and delivered with the help of some of our external partners (sport clubs and organisations). The purpose of the leadership academy is to inspire students to take an active role within their school in promoting physical activity and delivering School Games Level 1 competitions. We aim to support and train students to become confident and motivated Sport Leaders who are able to help the Westminster Sports Unit with Schools Games Level 2 competitions.
What to expect:
The Leadership Academy runs throughout the academic year, starting with a conference in September and finishing with a celebration in June. Between these dates schools will be offered one sport specific course (NGB or a sports company led course) and one follow-up leadership session. Schools will also be assigned three School Games Level 2 competitions for their Sports Leaders to attend and support.
Who is invited?
The programme is open to any secondary school which is a member of the Westminster PE and Schools Sport programme. The Leadership Academy is aimed at students in Years 8, 9 and 10.
The Leadership Conference was an all-day event that took place on Monday 19th of September 2016 at Lords Cricket Ground. The day was split into four workshops where students learnt the basics of sports coaching; volunteering roles and skills required; creating a school sports committee and how to effectively promote sporting opportunities. Guest speakers included Tin Tin Ho (2014 Commonwealth Games table tennis silver medallist, mixed doubles) and Alex Krol (2016 Invictus Games wheelchair tennis gold medallist, men’s tennis doubles).
