Help Shape ActiveWestminster’s Next Step in Accessible Fitness

Help Shape ActiveWestminster’s Next Step in Accessible Fitness

At Westminster City Council, we’re always looking for new ways to help residents, students, and workers lead healthier, more active lives. As part of this, we are exploring two innovative outdoor equipment offers designed to make physical activity more accessible for everyone:

  • Swing Fitness Boxes: Innovative outdoor fitness stations equipped with a range of weights and training gear. These boxes can be placed in parks, community centres, and other public spaces across Westminster. Using the Swing Fitness app, residents will be able to unlock and use the equipment for free, whether individually, in groups, or during coach-led sessions. The aim is to make fitness more accessible and encourage more people to get active in their local area.
  • Equip Sport Boxes: These provide access to a variety of sports equipment such as footballs, basketballs, and tennis rackets. Like Swing Fitness, these boxes would be placed in public spaces and accessed via an app, giving residents free use of the equipment for solo play, group activities, or coached sessions. This initiative is designed to make it easier for people of all ages to enjoy sports in their community and support more active lifestyles.

Now we want to hear from you

Your views are vital in helping us understand community needs and decide how and where these services could be introduced.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the survey, and your feedback will directly shape the future of accessible activity in Westminster.

Make sure you take this opportunity to consider all the consultation information and have your say! The survey is open until 10 September

We’re Improving Our Website: And We Need Your Input

At ActiveWestminster, our mission is simple — to support, inspire, and connect our community through sport, physical activity, and wellbeing. But to do that well, our website needs to work for you. That’s why we’re asking for your help to make it the best it can be.

We’re currently reviewing the ActiveWestminster website to understand what’s working well, what could be improved, and how easy it is for everyone to use. Whether it’s finding information quickly, using the site on different devices, or ensuring it’s accessible for people of all abilities, your feedback will make a real difference.

Check it out, click around, and let us know what works (and what doesn’t)!

It only takes a few minutes

We’ve put all the information you need about the consultation in one place to make it easier for you to take part.

Our short survey takes just 2–3 minutes to complete and your answers will help us shape a website that truly meets the needs of our community.

At the end, you can even choose to take part in a follow-up interview to share more detailed feedback. As a thank you, you’ll receive a £20 Love2Shop voucher.

Your voice matters

Every suggestion, comment, or observation will help and get us one step closer to building a website that’s easier to use, more accessible, and better reflects the ActiveWestminster spirit.

Have Your Say: Should Padel Come To Westminster?

Have Your Say: Should Padel Come To Westminster?

We’re exploring the possibility of introducing Padel – the world’s fastest growing sport – as a new facility offer in Westminster, and we want to hear from you!

What is Padel?

Padel is a fun, social racquet sport often described as a mix of tennis and squash. Played mainly in doubles on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court, it’s easy to learn, suitable for all ages and abilities, and perfect for bringing people together.

Have Your Say – Your Feedback Shapes What’s Next

We want to know if Padel is something that Westminster residents and stakeholders would like to see offered locally. To help us understand this, we are carrying out a preliminary survey to gather views on the potential demand, who might use the facilities, and how it could fit within our wider sports and leisure provision. No decisions have been made at this stage. Any future development would depend on factors such as local appetite, available space, funding, and alignment with our broader priorities, including inclusion, health, and accessibility.

If there’s strong interest, we’ll carry out more in-depth engagement to explore the possibilities and shape the next steps.

Have your say and help shape the future of sport in Westminster by completing our short survey by clicking on the button below.

A Street Transformed: Northumberland Place Play Street Launches

A Street Transformed: Northumberland Place Play Street Launches

On Monday 4th August 2025, Northumberland Place (W2 5BS) was officially transformed into Westminster’s newest Play Street and what a great success it was!

Families and neighbours turned out to enjoy a car-free street buzzing with play, creativity, and community spirit. Highlights from the launch included:

  • Playful games and friendly competition
  • Scooting, cycling, and free play for all ages
  • Neighbours connecting and celebrating a shared community space
  • Special guests to help us celebrate including the Lord Mayor and Councillor Cara Sanquest

Transforming streets, one at a time

Northumberland Place will regularly be closed to traffic during set times on evenings and weekends, creating a safer, community-driven space for families to play, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.

Next, the scheme will expand to Kilravock Street (W10) and Ashmore Road (W9) in Queens Park this September:

  • Kilravock Street: Friday 5 September, 4–6pm
  • Ashmore Road: Saturday 6 September, 1–4 pm

Each launch is another step towards turning busy streets into vibrant neighbourhood spaces where children can play safely and communities can come together.

A resident-led movement with real impact

Led by residents and supported by local volunteers, Play Streets are transforming urban streets into friendly, active place. This initiative coordinated by Westminster City Council, forms part of the wider Active Streets Programme and marks a fourfold increase in Play Streets since the first one was designated (Luton and  Fisherton Street) in 2019

By reducing traffic, Play Streets aim to:

  • Create safer play areas
  • Encourage stronger community connections
  • Promote physical activity and children’s wellbeing
  • Support cleaner, greener neighbourhoods

The bigger picture

Northumberland Place is conveniently located near Shrewsbury Road’s permanent School Street, one of 13 such schemes across the borough. School Streets close roads during school drop-off and pick-up times, enabling safer, cleaner travel for families.

A huge thank you to everyone – families, neighbours, volunteers, and councillors, and of course the Lord Mayor who made the Northumberland Place launch such a joyful transformation of a street into a vibrant, shared community space.
