FAQs

What is a Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab was an idea proposed in the Westminster Innovation Challenge launched in 2021 seeking ideas from residents, students, and Council officers on how we could build a smarter Westminster. Inspired by the Memory Lab Network in the United States, the Memory Lab’s main purpose is to provide a personal archiving program with the transfer of their memories to a more accessible and current digital format.

How do I access the Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab will be based in Church Street Library.  You do not need to book to use the Memory Lab as it is a drop-in service on a first-come-first served basis.

Why is the Memory Lab only open for a limited time?
The Memory Lab is a pilot service delivered by Smart City and the Libraries and Archives service following ideas submitted as part of the Westminster Innovation Challenge. The pilot is being initiated as a trial to test user satisfaction, user uptake and our processes.

What can I convert?

  • Photograph negatives or positives in the following format:
    • 35mm Film, 35mm Slides (2x2inch mount)
    • Medium Format (120/220), 5×4 Inch film;
  • Professional photographer negatives
  • Projector slides
  • Up to A3 size picture

What do I need to bring?
Bring along the images you would like to convert into a digital format. A USB device will be provided as part of the pilot service to store your converted memories for future personal use.

Users will be given the opportunity to contribute their memory material with Westminster Libraries and Archives service to be included in formal collections to showcase our modern social history. Should the user wish to contribute their memory material up to date contact details will be required to complete a deposit form giving consent to use their memory material.

What if I need assistance?
The free service located in a dedicated space within Church Street Library which will provide high quality transfer and scanning equipment for the Westminster community to use in transferring their personal collections to more accessible digital formats with the support of a digital volunteer.

Whilst using the Memory Lab, volunteers will also be able to triage users to access additional support they may require improving their skills and confidence with digital technology, as part of our Digital Inclusion program offering.

Capture those precious moments for generations to come!

This service has been extended until the 16th January 2024

Survey for Phase 2 of the ‘Know Ball Games Consultation’ is open

Survey for Phase 2 of the Know Ball Games Consultation is open

If you are a resident or a service user of Queens Park (Court, Estate and Gardens), Hallfield Estate or Churchill Gardens, then we want to hear from you!

Westminster Council aims to strengthen a culture of play, physical activity, leisure, and sport across our Lives, Neighbourhoods and City.

We appreciate that some behaviours of others can be frustrating to some residents, and this may be reflected in feedback and community perception, however supporting children and families to play outdoors, in the street, communal areas and open spaces is not antisocial behaviour and will contribute to significant health benefits.

The project will review restrictive signage and byelaws such as ‘No Ball Games’ and ‘No Cycling’ signs and look to replace / remove these where appropriate.

In this second phase, the survey aims to gather views from residents and service users of the three selected pilot locations Queens Park (Court, Estate and Gardens), Hallfield Estate and Churchill Gardens.

The questionnaire includes feedback on suggestions we heard during Phase 1 of the consultation so that we can come up with an effective solution that allows more people to lead healthy and active lives in Westminster.

Your views are important to us, so please take the survey.

Visit the ‘Know Ball Games in Westminster’ page to find out more about the whole pilot and consultation process.

Closure date for Seymour Centre set for Thursday 22nd Feb 2024

Westminster’s planning committee passed a planning application and Listed Building Consent application for the refurbishment of the historic Seymour Centre in Marylebone.

This means that we can share the proposed date of closure, set for Thursday 22nd February 2024.

The refurbishment work will include new and enhanced facilities including an open plan gym, refurbished swimming pool, contemporary library, café, children’s soft play area, and upgraded climbing wall, all whilst maintaining the buildings art deco features.

Central to the plans is also accessibility throughout and a reduction in carbon emissions. We want to thank all groups and residents who took the time to input into and inform the plans.

Stepping to the Beat on Monday 4th Sep

Stepping to the Beat - the 3km walk, jog or run event taking place on Sep 4

Stepping to the Beat  is a 3km jog, run or wheel event for residents with learning disability/autism, families and support workers.

The new edition this year will take place on Monday 4th September at the usual location, Regents Park.

Stepping to the Beat 2022

The course is set to 3km that participants can walk, run or wheel while playing instruments and sounds.  The event, in its consecutive 11th year, is an inclusive and welcoming event that encourages those with physical and learning disabilities to be more physically active. The event includes making sounds and noises as we go through the park. The Beat is contagious. The atmosphere, soul lifting.

Stepping to the Beat was created over 10 years ago and developed and directed by Claudia Linton, Care Manager – Planning & Information Coordinator from the Westminster Learning Disability Partnership Adult Services. This event has quickly become a celebration, a life-affirming, music-based event the Adult Social care team in Westminster City Council and ActiveWestminster are massively proud of.
